Rwanda

In 1994, genocide in Rwanda led to the killings of 800,000 men, women and children. Millions more fled.  While reconciliation continues, lasting peace and security must also be based on economic and social development.

The International Rescue Committee began work in Rwanda immediately following the genocide, focusing on emergency and relief operations. Over the years, the IRC has helped community-based organisations rebuild physical, social, political and economic institutions destroyed by the war.

The IRC works to bring communities and grassroots organisations in Rwanda together with local government to promote peace through development activities and citizen involvement in national and local governance, to support the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission in monitoring social cohesion, and to reduce child and maternal mortality.
