- In Brief
Guinea
Despite being one of the world's poorest countries, Guinea has accommodated nearly 1 million refugees since the early 1990s from civil wars in neighbouring Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cote d'Ivoire.
Having assisted with repatriating refugees from Sierra Leone between 2001 and 2004, the International Rescue Committee has continued to work in Guinea with Liberian and Ivorian refugees as well as Guinean communities who have hosted them.
Recently we have supported income generation and food security through technical support for peanut-growing cooperatives.
We also implement programming in education, protection and participatory community renewal. This has included providing and supporting education programmes for all ages, events and activities to promote participation and social cohesion, and legal trainings and information programmes on refugee, gender and child rights.
The IRC has reunified over 4,000 unaccompanied minors and separated children in Guinea, mainly from Sierra Leone and Liberia.
