- In Brief
Chad
Since 2003, a quarter of a million people have fled the Darfur region of western Sudan into neighbouring eastern Chad, many having witnessed or suffered the destruction of their villages, killing of family members or separation of children.
In February 2004, the International Rescue Committee launched emergency relief operations to provide life-saving assistance to the refugees and now manages the Oure Cassoni refugee camp, providing protection and support for 29,000 people. 90% of camp residents are women or children under the age of 18.
In August 2008, the IRC extended programmes into Bredjing refugee camp, also in eastern Chad, where we are now providing an additional 31,000 refugees with primary healthcare, including nutritional and reproductive services.
The IRC also supports around 10,000 Chadians in the Bahai region with health, child and youth activities and prevention of gender-based violence. Despite increasing insecurity including fighting between the Chadian National Army and rebel groups, the IRC remains committed to working in Chad in support of those fleeing violence and conflict.
