For over 15 years, Liberia was at the centre of a number of interrelated civil wars in West Africa that resulted in the displacement of millions across the region.

Since 1996, the International Rescue Committee has provided urgently needed assistance to those displaced by violence. With the success of the peace talks and regained stability, we are now concentrating on enhancing local capacity.

In particular we support primary and secondary healthcare facilities to protect against preventable diseases, provide obstetric care and promote safe motherhood. In Lofa County we work in 42 communities to empower local communities to be drivers and owners of their own recovery and to build community governance structures.

We also work to protect children in Liberia from child labour, support education and teacher training and promote women's rights from local to national level.
