Working with Refugees, Displaced People and Returnees
- There are an estimated 42 million refugees and conflict-affected displaced people in the world today.
The nature of conflict in the world is changing, impacting communities in very different ways to past wars. Environmental change and urbanisation are affecting conflict and displacement in new ways while modern wars no longer take place only on the battlefield.
- In the wars of the 1950s, the death rate of soldiers to civilians was nine to one. Today, the reverse is true: for every soldier killed, nine civilians die.
The International Rescue Committee is one of the first organisations to respond to a crisis, but we also stay throughout the recovery phase, supporting conflict-impacted communities and countries in their transition to sustainable peace and development.
