In August 2008, fighting between Georgian and Russian troops in the disputed Georgian province of South Ossetia forced an estimated 160,000 people to flee their homes.

The International Rescue Committee responded immediately, providing families who had sought shelter in schools and other public buildings with blankets and basic hygiene kits to help prevent the spread of disease.

Whilst the unrest is beginning to subside, many families have been unable to return home. We are working to ensure access to clean water, build latrines and provide shelter.

Additionally, we are also ensuring children don't miss out on schooling by providing catch-up classes in the temporary camps which have been established around the cities of Tbilisi and Gori.
