IRC women honoured by global media
12 November 2009
Two remarkable IRC women are being publicly recognised for their outstanding achievements working with refugees around the world.
Sarah Spencer, the IRC emergency response team's gender-based violence specialist, was last night awarded the International Angel category of Cosmopolitan magazine's Ultimate Women of the Year awards, chosen from thousands of nominations for exceptional women from across the UK.
Sarah, who lives in London, has worked for the IRC for four years. Over the past year she has worked in countries including Iraq, Cote d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Sarah hopes that the award will help raise awareness and inspire readers of Cosmopolitan magazine to take action to support the women and girls she works with, who are so affected by violence and brutality in conflict and post-conflict zones.
Also in the news is Khadija Bahram, the IRC's education coordinator in Afghanistan, who will receive an award from National Geographic Adventure magazine.
