IRC responds to fire in Addis Ababa

11 November 2009

Around 170 households are now homeless after a fierce fire destroyed their shelters in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa this week. The fire was just 1km from the IRC's main office, so staff immediately investigated the situation and have already distributed more than 350 blankets to survivors.

Our team also handed out over 350 pieces of plastic sheeting, to allow families who had lost their homes to construct makeshift shelters. The IRC is working in partnership with the Ethiopian Red Cross and the local neighbourhood administration (kebele), and will continue to monitor the situation.
